Start With Design—Not the Contractor

Because fixing what was done wrong is always more expensive than getting it right the first time.

Introduction

When people decide to build or renovate their home, they often start by calling a contractor.

It sounds logical—after all, they’re the ones who build the thing, right?

Here’s the problem: most contractors are focused on structure, budget, and timelines. They’re not responsible for spatial flow, long-term comfort, or the kind of decisions that make your home feel like yours.

That’s the designer’s job.

And if the designer comes in late, they’re usually just cleaning up someone else’s mess.

The Fallout of Calling Too Late

One of my clients, Ms. Hussein, made that exact mistake.

She hired a “design-build” team that promised everything under one roof—but lacked both real design experience and build quality.

Two years in, her home was still unfinished.

She had mismatched furniture, dated curtains, zero cohesion, and not a single space that felt intentional.

She told me:

“I’m all cried out. Just tell me what to do.”

So I did. And we started over.

We kept what we could—the floors, the doors (after refinishing them to perfection)—and rebuilt the rest from the ground up. We reworked layouts, reimagined the existing pieces, and layered in design that actually served how she wanted to live.

The result?

A home that finally felt calm, complete, and deeply personal.

The Difference When Design Leads

Now let’s look at The Lighthouse Project—a completely different experience.

This time, I was brought in first. Before the floor plans were finalized, before any contractor was chosen. I worked directly with the architect to shape the home around how the family actually lives.

We planned:

  • Power points based on real furniture layouts and daily habits
  • AC that doesn’t blast you in the face at dinner or while you sleep
  • Snug retreat spaces for quiet moments in a busy household
  • Lighting design layered for mood, function, and comfort
  • Even subtle details like nightlights on timers for late-night movement

And the infamous glass elevator the architect initially proposed in the middle of the feature staircase? Gone. Replaced by something far more elegant—and actually aligned with the home’s feel.

This is what happens when design leads from the start.

Why It Matters

A contractor builds the structure.

A designer shapes the experience.

And if you wait to bring a designer in until after the layout is finalized, the tiles are ordered, or the kitchen is installed, you’ve already given up the chance to do it right.

Design isn’t a finishing touch.

It’s the foundation.
